David Butcher

Position:
Finance and Property

David Butcher was born in Durban and went to Michaelhouse (like most of the males in his family!). After a spell in England at University, training as an accountant and finding his wife Jean he returned with her to Johannesburg. (Durban was too hot and muggy).

He was involved in the engineering industry at Lennings, a subsidiary of JCI until 1992, in management and finance. After a short spell with St John Ambulance he joined the staff of the Diocese, firstly as assistant Diocesan Secretary and then after john Hanna retired as Diocesan secretary. He retired in 2006. He remains involved in the Diocesan Retirement Homes, the AIDS ministry and Ministry formation Portfolio in the Diocese.

He now owns a small company that designs and makes websites to support his son Neil's business. The focus is on Distance Education and among the clients are the Department of Education.

He and his wife Jean have three sons and eight assorted grandchildren some of whom two live next door. In his "spare" time he enjoys watching rugby and cricket, playing computer games, gardening and walking, preferably in the countryside rather than the streets of Joburg.

Jean & David have been worshipping at St Luke's since 1968 and David was Treasurer for a long period in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
