Congratulations! If you are reading this then chances are you are either planning on getting married or know someone who is. Marriage is a unique and sacred partnership and you are in good company.
At St Luke’s marriage is revered for the commitment and new beginning it celebrates in the presence of God. Marriage is about an abiding bond between two people who love each other. It’s about love’s ability to create and nurture life, faithfulness and hope. In the ceremony it is also about a desire to have friends and family bear witness to your decision to say yes to each other in God’s company and blessing.
Marriage is unlike any other ritual. You are moving from a place of comfortable familiarity into a place of mystery. It’s a brave act. The walls and windows of a church define it as a sacred space set aside for community, worship, grace and sacraments. Marriage embodies this.
When Jesus turned water into wine He shared generously in the celebration of a couple choosing to publicly live, laugh and celebrate together with friends and loved ones and very directly their God.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 says:
“Two are better than one,
Because they have a good return for their work
If one falls down
His friend can help him up.
But pity the man who falls
And has no one to help him up!
Also, if two lie down together,
They will keep warm
But how can one keep warm alone?
Though one may be overpowered,
Two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands
Is not quickly broken.
St Luke’s has a holistic approach to marriage focusing on the ceremony as well as the journey that goes far beyond.
As Mignon McLaughlin puts it, “A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.”
